Welcome -- Plan your work, work your plan

Most rental center operations featured in Pro Contractor Rentals have been around for decades; some are second or even third-generation firms. They have a rich history on which to make their business decisions.
This issue, we feature Mike Evans and Meredith LaRue at Evcon Rentals, a startup rental center in Hot Springs, Arkansas. They opened the business in late September 2019 and this year, have added a satellite branch as well as a new main rental center they will by the end of the year.
Mike has a strong background in commercial construction, and Meredith has construction in her blood; her father is a local contractor and she’s also cut her rental teeth with a major rental chain.
When they started their discussion of launching an independent equipment rental center, they took about nine months to develop their business plan. What could they offer that makes them different from other rental centers in the area? Where was the greatest opportunity for growth, both in the short and long term? What types of tools and equipment could they offer that would differentiate them from the already-established competition?
Evcon Rentals’ plan of offering types of equipment that’s not readily found in other rental centers in addition to the standard fare of man and material lifts and excavation equipment has been attracting contractors and DIYers to their business. It appears to be working, as they continue to expand their presence in this market.
Evans and LaRue have planned their work and now, they are working their plan. It seems to be working out very well.
