Product Focus: Hybrid/dual-fuel tools and equipment

LED towers plug in or use generator power
Lind Equipment’s Beacon LED tower offers the same lighting power of traditional 4 x 1,000-watt metal-halide light towers, but in a completely unexpected package. Compact, lightweight, and truly man-portable, the Beacon LED Tower can be transported with ease without any compromise in durability and stability. It uses high-efficiency LED lights and runs whisper-quiet on user-supplied generators or when attached to an external source of power. With an additional fuel tank that can be built into the unit, the LED Tower can run for up to 45 hours before refueling. It features operating costs of as little as $0.10/hour and it is virtually maintenance-free. Available with two or four light heads and in yellow or black. Two towers can run on one 15-amp circuit or can be powered by suitcase-type generators. The towers can be lifted into the back of a pick-up truck for easy transportation. They are available in lay-flat models or in vertical mast models to best fit your application.

Genie hybrid lift

4WD articulating boom lift

Terex AWP’s fuel-electric Genie Z-60/37FE boom lift offers indoor and outdoor capabilities in one machine. It offers lower cost of operation and cleaner performance. This fuel-efficient model combines the benefits of advanced diesel power, four-wheel drive performance and the cleaner, quieter efficiency of compact, low-weight electric-powered booms. It can operate all day in full-electric mode on a single charge; or in hybrid mode, it can operate with more than a week of run time on one tank of diesel fuel. In hybrid mode, a 24-horsepower Tier 4/Stage IIIB Final engine-powered generator maintains the battery charge or provides extra power. Rugged four-wheel drive offers 45 percent gradeability, 13-inch ground clearance and can travel 25 percent faster than diesel-powered units.

Compact excavator
The Takeuchi TB216H is a dual-powered min excavator that uses a diesel engine and electric motor combination that allows it to work indoors and outdoors. The engine and motor are equipped with their own hydraulic pumps to power hydraulics. The diesel engine can be used to load, unload and power the machine to an enclosed job site. Once onsite, it can be plugged into a 400-480-volt, three-phase power for 100 percent emissions-free operation. For greater versatility and convenience, the TB216H utilizes the same controls for all machine functions, including the keyed ignition and throttle control.

norkel bi-energy scissor liftS

Bi-energy scissor lift
The Snorkel S3370BE adds bi-energy capabilities to the S3370RT compact diesel scissor lift with DC and diesel power. Switching to battery power for indoor work helps meet noise and emissions laws and regulations. It is powered by a diesel engine, has a roll-out deck extension and non-marking, high-grip tires for ultimate job site flexibility for indoor and outdoor work. The four-wheel drive unit with articulated steering also has hydraulic stabilizers with automatic leveling. Unit is equipped with drive-motion and descent alarms; other safety features include fold-down guardrails, flashing amber lights, manual lowering valve and dual lanyard attachment points.

Hybrid boom lift
JLG Industries, Inc., offer the H800AJ hybrid boom lift that features the design of its standard 800AJ articulating boom but uses parallel hybrid technology of a powerful electric motor/generator and a Tier 4 Final engine. The motor/generator and engine combination provide diesel-like performance and can also run just on its battery pack located in the counterweight. The maintenance-free batteries charge by the unit’s generator, reducing noise and producing zero emissions. The unit offers an 80-feet platform height with an unrestricted platform capacity of 500 pounds. Its standard jib provides additional reach as well as up-and-over capability so the operator can position the platform independent of the main boom. An oscillating axle and four-wheel drive offer improved traction during operation on uneven surfaces and off-slab. Additional features include continuous turntable rotation and zero tail swing when the tower is elevated for increased productivity throughout the workday.

Volvo electric powered compact equipment

Compact equipment under development
Volvo Construction Equipment is skipping the dual power approach altogether and has taken a leadership role on electromobility as it plans to launch a range of electric compact excavators and wheel loaders by the middle of 2020.
The company says it will discontinue new diesel engine development of compact excavator models ranging from the EC15 to EC27 and wheel loaders from the L20 to L28.
However, diesel engine versions of these products will continue to be manufactured alongside the new electric models to meet market demands.

Battery-powered mini excavator
The Kato 9VXB mini excavator totally eliminates the need for an internal combustion engine with Li-ion battery power. The unit has an 8-hour run time on one charge and the batteries can be charged at any point in the use cycle without fear of charging memory effect. A fast 3-hour charger is available. At an operating weight of 2,060 pounds, it has a bucket digging force of 2,360 pounds. It exerts 3.8 psi of ground pressure and the track base can adjust from 27.5 to 37.5 inches wide to allow the unit to fit through narrow passages. The gear-driven hydraulic pump can product 5 gpm auxiliary hydraulic flow for attachments. The bucket cylinder hose is inside the excavator arm, improving forward visibility and helps protect it from damage. The unit can be outfitted with 8-, 12-, 16- or 18-inch buckets.
