Product Focus: Compactors

Single-direction compactor
Doosan Portable Power offers the BX-60 single-direction, vibratory-plate compactor that offers greater maneuverability on the job site, compaction in confined areas and fold-over handles that provide easy storage. The compactor has the highest centrifugal force in the industry and the only handle-mounted ratcheting throttle designed for improved control around job-site obstacles, sources report. With an operating weight of 182 pounds delivering a centrifugal force of 3,400 pounds and a vibration frequency of 5,600 vibrations per minute, it can travel up to 82 feet per minute covering up to 6,943 square feet per hour at a compaction depth of 12 inches. Powered by a Honda four-cycle engine, it is fitted with vibration-reducing, padded-grip handles that are fully adjustable to maximize operator comfort and transport convenience.

MBW compactor

Vibratory plate compactor line
MBW introduces the GP15 to 26 vibratory plate compactors that offer increased weight, amplitude and travel speed. Powered by a GX390 Honda engine, with a diesel model coming soon, they come in 24-, 26- and 28-inch widths. They are built to shift direction easily and offer up to 20 percent faster travel speed and variable travel speed in forward or reverse. Their design produces less hand/arm vibration. A protective wrap-around roll cage and solid-steel plates offer substantially higher abrasion resistance and strength than cast iron, making these units durable. Their patented design allows lower hydraulic shift seal replacement in 30 minutes versus up to 6 hours in competitive designs. This is the only reversible plate line made in the USA, MBW sources report.

Multi-purpose compactor
The Bomag BMP8500 multi-purpose compactor is designed for base preparation, compaction around footings and foundations and trench backfilling. Its center-point articulated steering offers exceptional maneuverability in confined areas and a dual-function radio/cable remote control provides reliable, safe operation from outside the trench. With Bomag’s Operator Safety System (BOSS), the machine’s travel system automatically stops if the operator enters into close proximity of the machine. It can fit in trenches as narrow as 24 inches. Segmented compactor drums come in 24- and 33.5-inch widths with 1-inch padfoot height that can be switched within minutes. Powered by a Tier 4 Kubota 19.4-hp. water-cooled diesel engine, its Ecomode setting automatically idles the unit if the remote control is not activated. The unit generates 8,000 and 16,000 pounds of centrifugal force. The optional Economizer compaction measuring system can eliminate unnecessary passes.

MultiQuip compactor

Articulating trench roller
The MQ Rammax RX1575 is an all-new articulating trench roller designed to meet contractor expectations for performance and reliability. Flexible drum options include easily removed drum rings that adjust from 33- to 24-inch working widths. The roller can produce 16,860 or 8,430 pounds of centrifugal force. The rollers oscillate and articulate to offer unparalleled stability over uneven terrain, Multiquip sources report. Powered by a fuel-efficient Yanmar diesel engine, it consumes 50 percent less fuel than leading competitive models. The unit has a grease-free articulation joint and all maintenance points are accessible through the fold-out front and rear covers. The new design simplifies operation and reduces downtime, Multiquip sources add.

Sakai compactor

Steerable walk-behind roller
The Sakai HS67ST is the only steerable walk-behind tandem roller and offers features that simplify compaction. Powered by 6.44-horsepower Honda GX390U1 engine, the steerable front drum adds maneuverability and safety when compared with fixed-drum machines. Its tight side-frame clearance allows exceptionally close compaction next to obstructions. With an operating weight of 1,655 pounds, it offers compaction width of 25 inches with its 14-inch diameter drums. Centrifugal/impact force is rated at 2,655 foot-pounds at 3,300 vpm. The unit has an onboard sprinkler system with 7.9-gallon capacity, which makes the unit particularly well-suited for smaller asphalt projects.

Vibratory rammer
The Weber MT SRV 300 vibratory rammer weighs just 70 pounds and wasdeveloped specifically for proper compaction around conduits in trenches. It is especially flexible and secure to use in a tilted position and perfect for tight spaces while operating at full power. Equipped with 4-stroke GX 35 Honda gasoline engine, it produces 790 bpm with 9.1 kN of force. The unit will be available in September, Weber MT sources report.

Chicago Pneumatic compactor

Forward/reversible plate compactor
Chicago Pneumatic Construction Equipment (CP) has launched the MV224 forward/reversible plate compactors. The gasoline-powered model is powerful, durable and operates at a high speed for increased efficiency on the job site. It has a 19.7-inch plate width with a bottom plate that is made of Hardox 400 steel that resists wear while maintaining good bendability. The MV224 delivers nearly 8,100 pounds of centrifugal force at 3,500 vibrations per minute and speeds up to 82 feet per minute. The Honda engine is well-protected by a heavy-duty frame and with regulated speed and compaction depth, control of the forward and reversible movement is easy. Vibration-dampened handles enable smooth, consistent operation for optimum compaction levels.
