It takes a team

Clair Urbain, Editor
What is in your
secret sauce?
-- CLAIR URBAIN, EDITOR

It’s always a privilege and a pleasure to sit down with rental center leadership and get their take on their businesses. One of my favorite questions is asking for the ingredients in their “secret sauce.” It usually causes a thoughtful pause; some say it’s a secret.

Others, like Scott Wistar at Wistar Equipment, which is featured in this issue’s Rental Center feature, don’t hesitate. “It’s the great team of people we have here,” Wistar said without any reservation.

Wistar is an other-focused type of guy. He puts his people first. It’s helped his family business, which was started by his father, grow into the go-to rental place for compressed air and electrical power generation equipment in the greater Philadelphia area and beyond.

From partnering with manufacturers, to developing next-generation equipment that customers are requesting, to offering true 24/7/365 service and support, customers have come to rely on Wistar and his team for their rentals. It’s truly the secret sauce of their business. I hope you enjoy the story and gain some insight into their success in the rental business.

We also hope you find the “team approach” we took in our Industry Outlook story on trenchers helpful and interesting. Here, we asked experts in the trencher business to share what customers are increasingly requesting and how new trencher models fulfill those needs. We hope it sparks some ideas on new models that will help you get more rental business and improve your ROI.

Some of the most important team members in rental operations are the maintenance staff. Good maintenance staff can be heroes to customers and to the bottom line. That’s why we are increasing our coverage on maintenance; most specifically, preventive maintenance.

As rubber-tracked equipment increases in popularity, effective maintenance and proper user training can go a long way to lengthen track life. When you team up sound maintenance and proper user training, you’ll be able to keep units on rent and out of the shop.

Similarly, in this issue we discuss the benefits of solid tires on rental equipment. Eliminating flat tires on rental equipment helps improve uptime and reduce repair and replacement costs.

Now and in the future, we’ll continue to team up with industry experts to deliver the information you need to improve your rental operation and most important, your ROI.
