2016 Florida Auctions Show Decline in Heavy Equipment Volume

An analysis of Florida "mega auctions" shows year over year trends in volume, age and price for backhoe loaders, 4WD articulated wheel loaders, telehandlers, electric scissor lifts and tracked excavators, notes Brian Lee, data analyst for EquipmentWatch. While the auction companies reported record sales this year, popular construction and lift equipment shows an overall decline.

Telehander and backhoe loader volume decreased significantly from 2015, 78 percent and 41 percent, respectively, with excavators declining about 15 percent. Electric self-propelled scissor lifts increase 15 percent, and 4WD wheel loaders were up 5 percent, but total volume across the five types of equipment shows a 27 percent drop, Lee noted.  You can find his article here

Average age of those five equipment types stayed about level with last year, although telehandlers and backhoe loaders, which showed the most significant drop in volume, gained a year on their average age. Lee notes that this could suggest either lower popularity in auctions or they're being kept in fleets longer than before.

While volume and age of equipment at auction can influence prices, prices dropped across the board this year, he wrote, which may have more to do with the market than with the assets' conditions.
