OSHA delays silica rule enforcement

Although the effective date of new silica rules was September 23, OSHA reports it will not issue citations for another 30 days.

The agency will refrain from posting fines or citations to any company that is  taking steps toward meeting the regulation's requirements.

Construction dive reporter Kim Slowey says OSHA officials predict the new rule will prevent more than 900 cases of silicosis annually, but industry groups have filed a legal challenge against the rule and are awaiting a decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
